From the Wire: New Product Developments

The last few weeks have brought us a great deal of information about what is coming down the pipe from Wizards over the next few months. First up is a small amount of details on the greatly anticipated Devine Vs. Demonic box set scheduled to street on April 10, 2009.

So far we know that it will contain Akroma, Angel of Wrath, Luminous Angel, Lord of the Pit, and Demonic Tutor. I suspect that we will have full deck lists in the coming 2 weeks, but nothing confirmed yet. The most interesting thing about this product so far, ironically has nothing to do with this product.

The recently previewed artwork for Demonic Tutor features Lilliana Vess, and may impart an important clue as to the origin and identity to the Demonic Trio with which she has been reveled to be indebted to. It has long be believed that Lilliana's Demons were of Kami origins. Honestly I'm not entirely clear on this, but it has something to do with the Rune work tattoos which appear as her power is used. Several folks believe the Demonic Trio is composed of Kuro, Kyoki, and Yukora. Now, I think this artwork does confirm a Kami origin for this Demon, and supports the Trio's Kami origins, but I just don't think this artwork looks particularly like any one of the three in question. Strangely enough, this new artwork does resemble an odd hybridized version of all three Demons together. This has spurned a new theory that the demons manifest as one combined entity since their defeat in the Kami war. I for one am not yet sold on this idea, but it is interesting none the less.

On other fronts, Wizards has answered a lot of question recently about the future of core set. It turns out that both sides of the debate were correct, and that their theories were not mutually exclusive. There Will continue to be a core set, which will be a a radical departure from the past, but there will be no Eleventh Edition. For more information on this development, I recommend you read the official information from the mothership.

There has also been some information from Wizards confirming that there will be a new from the Vault set this Fall, and an unconfirmed report that there will be a Duel Deck this Christmas season as well. I suspect that the Vault will bring us Vampires, and that the new Duel Deck will be Beasts led by Garruk, and Zombies led by none other then Liliana herself as preludes to in Wizard Web comic from last year.

and Now for Something Completely Different

Well, maybe not completely different. I often use this platform to talk about something I've heard related to Magic the Gathering . Today I'm going to talk about something I have heard more and more. Sometimes in life, media, and imagination somethings take on a life of their own, becoming more then sum of their parts, and reaching beyond the scope and measure of the seed thought which spawned them. Recently it has come to my attention that something as simple as a color, has done just that. We've come together today through the force and will of pink . For a year now this simple blending of red and white has brought people together from all across the globe, inspired and renewed friendships, shared hopes, dreams, and passions of individuals. It has in some small but measurable way, changed the world, and the people in it. I have thought that I was beyond the scope of this phenomenon, as beyond an impressive collection of scars, I really have nothing pink in my life. Let...

Grim Tidings #26: Flip-Flop

I think the majority of magic articles I write aren't very helpful. For the most part are a stream of self-congratulatory praise of how great my proven decks are. Sure, my cutting sarcasm and wit occasionally generate a chuckle (I still love the Chaos Orb piece) but for the most part, I they all smoosh together into a long wordy rant of why I think this-or-that card is so great and why you should play it too. It’s my own fault. I pretend that everyone who reads my ramblings knows who I am, and has the same preference in play style. I assume everyone plays Casual-Competitive Magic, that they all play 300 card 5-Color decks, highlander style, and they have access to all 10,000+ cards to randomly insert in Deck XYZ at any moment’s notice. Obviously this is untrue. The root of the problem may lie in my core deck: “First Reminder”. I gush on and on about this deck, partly to brag on my collection, and partly to show-off my self-proclaimed cleverness. The deck has gained notoriety (for w...
